The Challenge: Overcoming High Uncertainty in Enzyme Campaigns

Enzyme discovery and optimization campaigns have long been plagued by high uncertainty and a “trial-and-error” methodology. This approach often requires significant financial investment, as well as months, or even years, of work with no guarantee of success.

Zymvol was founded in 2017, and despite the technological advantage that our computational methods provided at the time, our overall project success rate was just 53%. This meant a significant portion of our projects failed, leading to unhappy clients and wasted resources. Unless we found a solution to the high uncertainty attached to enzyme campaigns, we knew this model would remain unsustainable.

 

Our Solution

To help our clients gain more certainty before they committed to a full-scale campaign, we came up with the “Feasibility Assessment” —a rapid, preliminary study designed to predict a project’s chances of success before any major investment.

This quick, data-driven analysis gave clients a clear, objective view of their project’s viability, allowing them to:

  • Proceed with Confidence
    If the assessment predicted a high chance of success, the client could move forward with a clear understanding of the positive outcome.
  • Cut Losses Early
    If the assessment revealed a low chance of success (“High Risk”), the client could choose to end the project at this initial stage. This saved them from a potentially failed, costly campaign and allowed them to reallocate resources to more promising projects.

This simple yet powerful step transformed the client-provider relationship, providing a level of transparency and risk mitigation previously unheard of in the industry.

    Enzyme Discovery campaigns went from an average success rate of 38% to 78%, while Enzyme Optimization campaigns climbed from 69% to an impressive 93%. This led to our overall project success rate soaring from 53% to 85%.

    By predicting the outcome of a biocatalysis project, we gave companies a clear view of their journey. Whether they chose to continue or not, their investment in biocatalysis was now money well spent. This created a true win-win situation, saving time and resources for both us and our clients.
